Helpful Reminders

A LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Hello Shapiro Families,

We have made it through our first month of the school year! Our top priority continues to be having all students attend school daily.

Did you know that good attendance,

  • Creates educational foundation
  • Learn essential academic and life skills
  • Help develop social emotional skills
  • Creates sense of engagement and belonging
  • Better prepares students for post secondary options

Make sure you have a plan for getting to school on time in the morning and a back up plan if something comes up. In the event that your child is absent, call the office and let us know as soon as possible.

Wishing you well,

Courtney Willert

FALL PARADE

On Friday, October 31 Shapiro students will celebrate fall with a Fall Festival Party. During the celebration students are allowed to dress in their costume. One of our school traditions is students parading around the school block in their costumes. This parade includes all students K-5 and will be held around 2:05. Families are welcome to watch the parade along the route making sure to keep the sidewalks and path clear for students to walk on. If the weather is unfavorable, the parade will be held inside. Once the parade concludes, students will return to their classrooms for their celebrations and will be dismissed at 2:45.

Students should come to school dressed in their regular clothes and can bring their costumes to school for later. Costumes should be in a bag for later. Before the celebration they will change into their costumes.

Costume Guidelines:

  • Costumes should be free of masks and face paint
  • Must be school appropriate - Anything scary or violent will not be allowed
  • Weapons of ANY kind are not allowed - including fake/toy weapons

Want to pick up your child early? Let the office know before the parade so your student can stay in the office and be ready to go.

Your child(ren)’s teacher will be sharing information about the classroom celebrations. Remember all items must be store bought and there should be enough provided for all students.

Want to volunteer during the celebrations? A completed background check and approval is needed. For more information, visit our website at https://shapiro-stem-academy.oshkosh.k12.wi.us/families/volunteer.

GEARING UP FOR FALL

As our days are turning a bit darker and cooler, it's time to gear up so you can keep walking and rolling all season long.

  • Wear reflective clothing when walking or rolling, so vehicles can see you more easily
  • Never assume drivers see you - make eye contact with the driver before crossing in front of vehicles
  • Be alert - keep your eyes and ears open
  • Use EXTRA caution when walking, biking, or driving in the rains as the roads can be slippery
Helmet Safety: the helmet should sit 2 fingers width about your eyebrows. Only 2 fingers should fit under the chin strap. The side straps should form a v under the ears.

Speak up Speak Out Wisconsin

School safety and the wellbeing of our students and staff are our top priorities. We recently have implemented SPEAK UP, SPEAK OUT. This system was created by the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of School Safety (OSS). Speak Up Speak Out is a comprehensive, one-stop place to turn with important concerns.

Students, parents, school staff, or any community members can submit a school safety concern or threat via our website, their website (https://speakup.widoj.gov/) mobile phone application (available on their website), or toll-free number (available on their website). Staff work around-the-clock to respond to tips and to deploy a response locally by communicating directly with school administrators, law enforcement, and counselors.

New SUSO Text Feature

Speak Up Speak Out - Wisconsin is happy to announce a new feature: SUSO Text Tips. SUSO Text Tips will allow tipsters to report concerning behavior even if they do not have the SUSO website or mobile app. Tipsters can text SUSO to 738477 and make a report to SUSO via a direct link to the SUSO tip form. SUSO Text Tips will make it even easier to submit a confidential report on a mobile device.
