Welcome Back

Dear Families,

Whether you are starting your first year at Shapiro or have been part of our School Family in the past, we want you to know the staff here at Shapiro are excited to welcome you to a wonderful year of learning!  We have been working hard throughout the summer to ensure we are prepared to safely and successfully open our doors on Tuesday, September first. Please know that our entire Shapiro community’s safety and well-being continue to be a top priority. We are committed to working with you to create a shared understanding of safety measures and expectations during this unprecedented time. Partnership and relationships are key to our students’ success!

Various changes and new practices and protocols have been developed to follow the Oshkosh Area School District recommended safety guidelines. The goal is to collaboratively ensure that all staff, students, and families feel safe and are able to effectively navigate the complexities of our “new normal” amid COVID-19.  The measures being implemented include more frequent sanitizing of work areas, access to handwashing and sanitizer throughout the building, and access to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as individual student plastic protective dividers, temperature checks and social distancing expectations, including the use of face masks/coverings.  Please know that safety is one of our top priorities; hence, due to the volume of people on our school grounds before and after school, we ask all (adults and children) to wear face masks/coverings during this time.

Below are just a few highlights to ensure a safe and successful beginning for all as we navigate our “new normal.”

-Guardians are asked to check their child’s temperature before arriving at school.  If your child is symptom-free, has had no known COVID exposure, and does not have a fever, they are invited to school.  If your child has a fever or is exhibiting symptoms, please call the office to share your child’s absence and this information.

-Students are expected to come to school with a mask/face covering that will not interrupt classroom instruction. Students will be taught safety expectations in a fun, nurturing environment.  Note: students will be given mask breaks periodically throughout the day.  All students will be issued a break-away lanyard, which will be clipped on their mask at the beginning of the day.  This will allow for eating, drinking, mask breaks, and recess to occur without losing or dropping their mask. Thank you for sending your child to school with a mask/face covering and a clean water bottle labeled with their name. Water fountains will only be used for filling bottles or cups.

-As to not mix cohorts of students, we will not have before school recess.  Upon arrival, students are expected to go directly to their designated meeting spot on the back playground to meet their teacher at 7:40 AM.   A visual of the meeting spots will be shared upon completion.

-Entrance to the building will be limited to students, staff, and essential workers.  If, for any reason, you are in need to drop something off or pick up your child for an appointment, please use our front door’s communication system, and we will assist you from there.

-To assist with our new routines and procedures, it may be helpful to have your child practice wearing a mask if they have not had the opportunity to do so yet.  Also, if your child is eating a lunch from home, be sure he/she can independently open all items.

-A comprehensive Shapiro Family Guidebook will come out shortly, including more detailed information.  Thank you again for your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times and know that we have missed your children and families.  We look forward to a successful 2020-21 school year!

Sincerely,

Trina Anderson and Shapiro STEM Academy Staff

Safety here at Shapiro STEM Academy is one of our top priorities. All adults and students are required to wear masks during pick-up and drop-off due to the volume of people in a short amount of time.  Please reserve the circle drive in front of the school for our buses and those that have appropriate handicap parking permits.  If you wish to walk your child onto the back playground to their meeting spot, please use one of our designated parking lot stalls or street parking.  If you wish to remain in your car for drop off or pick up we ask that you use the appropriate exit and entrance into the parking lot. Please use lane A to drop off and pick up and lane B to exit our parking lot.  Please enter lane A and pull all the way forward to the orange cone.  Please do not drive/stop on the yellow walk lane. You may wait in your car in lane A while your child enters your car door from the right.   Then pull into lane B to exit the parking lot. A visual is located on the last page of the Shapiro STEM Academy Family Guidebook.
