OASD Cybersecurity Update Impacting K-8 Students
The Oshkosh Area School District's commitment to student safety and student data privacy and security is on-going. With this understanding, please see below for an important email security update impacting K-8 students.
The District has disabled outside email for students in grades K-8.
-
This change was made on September 9, 2022 based on the District's ongoing review of best practices and amid recent cybersecurity attacks targeting school districts.
-
Parents/guardians are no longer able to email K-8 students at their district email address and K-8 students cannot email non-OASD email addresses.
-
Parents/guardians who need to get information to their children during the school day should contact their school office. Additionally, parents/guardians are also able to email their child's school secretary and ask that information be shared/forwarded to their child if needed.
This information was initially shared with K-8 families on September 13, see OASD Technology Update 09.13.22: K-8 Email Access. Additional information explaining this decision is available below.
The Situation: The OASD’s Technology Team was made aware of several districts in Wisconsin who were the victims of cyberattacks as school started (Elmbrook School District Article). These attacks resulted in student, family, and staff data being compromised as well as ransomware in some instances. The OASD is deeply committed to protecting student, family, and staff information and has put in several protective measures in recent years. What we realized is that our main area of risk centered on our youngest learners in grades K-8 and a data incident could easily come from those accounts. We worked with our teachers to learn what educational impact there would be from this change and realized that having outside email is not used for education purposes in those grade levels.
What We Missed: What we missed were those instances where parents were using this email access to communicate with their children. In previous situations, and with the proliferation of students using cellphones, we observed that most communicated with their children via text. We assumed that this would continue and in those instances where that was not possible, an email or call to the building secretary would provide that line of communication as it had in past years.
Resolution Going Forward: Cybersecurity is always a balance between protection and convenience. We will continue to do everything in our power to protect students and our student, family, and staff data while at the same time trying to make things as easy and convenient as possible. We will continue monitoring the situation as it is unfolding in other districts to learn more about how the attacks occurred and what we can do to ensure it does not happen here. Unfortunately, it is not feasible to continually monitor and whitelist the emails of our 17,000 parents and guardians. We will, however, monitor the situation with our clerical staff to see what type of message volume they are relaying and at what grade levels. If there is any way to restore access without putting student, family, or staff information at risk, we will gladly do so. Until that time, please email or call your building secretary if you wish to have something relayed to your child.
CONTACT: If you have any questions related to this update or the District's commitment to data privacy and security, please contact Deputy Superintendent Dave Gundlach (david.gundlach@oshkosh.k12.wi.us or 920.424.0016).

Halloween Parade- October 31st, 2:15pm
We welcome families to join us for the Shapiro Halloween Parade! Students will begin exiting through the back of the building at 2:15, take the walkway down to Knapp, turn right on Knapp and proceed to the front of the building. If weather permits, students will continue to walk around the outside of the building on the grass to the back of the building and through the back door. If the grass is wet, students will enter through the front door.
A few important tips about costumes for your student:
*While students are welcome to wear costumes for the parade, students are NOT to come to school wearing their costume.
*Please be sure that your student is able to change into their costume with little-to-no difficulty.
*To promote a festive environment at Shapiro, we ask that students wear costumes that are of a non-violent nature. Please be aware that costumes may not include weapons per school board policy 443.51. In addition, students who wear masks or costumes not suitable for our environment will be asked to remove them.
Families, please remember that there is no parking in the pick up lines. We need to be keeping those lanes open for a safe and steady flow of traffic. Please see the Traffic Flow and Parking Document for more specific information.
Additionally, there is no parking in the circle driveway in front of the building, unless you have a form of handicapped identification visible on your vehicle. If that is the case, please park in the designated parking spots only. We ask that you not park in front or in back of the busses for the safety of all students and staff.
Thank you!

Health Room News
With cold season heading our way, our friends are sure to be coming down with a cough at some point. Please remember, students are NOT to have cough drops at school without a signed Medication Treatment Request. You may request to have one sent home with your student if you are unable to print your own. Once the form is signed and returned, the cough drops will be kept in the Health Room and handed out to your student as needed. We are unable to allow students to have cough drops, or ANY over-the-counter medication without this form on file. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Health Assistant, Kendra Lehrer (kendra.lehrer@oshkosh.k12.wi.us) or our Nurse, Amber Mankiewicz (amber.mankiewicz@oshkosh.k12.wi.us)
Office Tips From Mrs. Molash
We're off to a GREAT start to our school year!!! Here are a couple of reminders for our families as we continue on through the year:
*NEW THIS YEAR: we are no longer allowing families to park in the parking lot during drop off and pick up times. We ask that you please park along Knapp St., or 18th Ave. when you are dropping off and picking up your student. You are also welcome to use the drop off/pick up line that goes around the perimeter of the parking lot. (See: Traffic Flow Pattern) Parking spots are reserved for staff only.
*Playground supervision does not begin until 7:30am. We ask that you do not drop your students off before that time. Teachers get students from the back playground at 7:40am. If your student is arriving after that time, they will need to come in through the front door of the school.
*The school day ends at 2:45pm. We ask that students are picked up immediately after being dismissed from school. Staff leave the building shortly after the students are dismissed, and they are unable to supervise them if not picked up on time. If you will not be able to pick up your students at 2:45, we ask that you please make arrangements with our after school care, The Boys and Girls Club. Their number is 920.233.1414 Otherwise, PLEASE be sure that you are communicating with your student, as well as the office, on how they will be getting home, or where they will be getting picked up.
*If your student needs to leave school for any reason during the day, please be sure to let the office know ahead of time to give us proper time to get them ready for when you arrive.
*Students who arrive after 7:55am will be marked unexcused. We are unable to excuse a late student unless we hear from the parent directly.
As always, if you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach me at 920.424.0164, or by email rachel.molash@oshkosh.k12.wi.us
